Channel 4 Sign UK Employment Pledge
UK independent broadcasters Channel 4 have signed the government’s social mobility business compact pledge; a scheme which works to ensure that young people have fair and open access to employment opportunities. Wednesday 5 June saw Channel 4 open its doors to the ‘Open Doors’ initiative, where it hosted 40 14-18 year olds from disadvantaged backgrounds around the UK.
They were welcomed by Channel 4’s CEO David Abraham and learnt about Channel 4’s 4Talent scheme from the broadcaster’s Industry Talent Specialist, Priscilla Baffour.
4Talent is Channel 4’s nationwide scheme, which exists to support people aiming for a future in the media industry, and offers employment advice and inspiration, work experience placements, apprenticeships and master classes.
"The approach reflects Channel 4’s mission to break down barriers and engage with and develop the widest range of talent," a statement from Channel 4 said.
"By demystifying the media sector, 4Talent aims to help young people from all backgrounds navigate their way into what is a hugely competitive industry."
The scheme’s national road show started in 2011. The 4Talent Days offer young people aged 16 to 25 who are keen to learn about working in the creative industry, the opportunity to network with local creative businesses and Channel 4 employees, with the possibility of gaining work experience placements.
Diane Herbert, Channel 4’s Director of Human Resources said: "We’re very proud to be part of the social mobility business compact pledge. At Channel 4 we know that good ideas can come from anywhere and we are incredibly passionate about providing opportunities for people enthusiastic about a career in the media industry, regardless of their experience or background. We’re extremely focussed on offering opportunities for people from all walks of life and truly reflecting the diversity of today’s Britain within the Channel."
