Bradford Film Lecturer To Address National Conferences
Bradford Film School has announced one of its top lecturers Franzi Florack is to address three national research conferences, sharing her ideas on the role of film in helping schoolchildren succeed in the classroom.
Franzi, 25, works at the new Bradford-WWI Film School as a lecturer and is also studying for a PhD which looks at how films can provide a stimulus to engage pupils in creative writing.
German-born Franzi explained: "Since its invention 115 years ago, film has continued to affect people in a way that very few other media can. Understanding the connection between emotion and motivation has the potential to help teachers engage students and increase attainment levels in any subject."
Franzi was speaking at the University of Leeds Education Research Students’ Annual Conference on 9 May and will address the Kaleidoscope Postgraduate Conference, University of Cambridge, on 30 May.
On 6 June, Franzi will address the Translation and Transformation Conference at the University of Sheffield.
Franzi’s PhD centres on observing Year 5 schoolchildren involved in a media literacy scheme run by the Bradford UNESCO City of Film initiative. Questionnaires and writing tests will document the pupils’ emotional reaction to films and their impact on attainment.
She added: "Few academics have investigated film’s role as a teaching tool – I think it’s important to support the use of film and media in the classroom by objectively evaluating their impact on students’ attitudes and performances."
Bradford-WWI Film School is a partnership with Whistling Woods International, Asia’s premier film institute rated among the 10 best film schools in the world by The Hollywood Reporter.
The film school’s courses are in photography, film, and art and design animation.
