Shure Equips Westminster Dance Event

News Image
Shure's ULX-D radio mic system recently made waves at the first ever dance music event to be held in the Palace of Westminster, at the heart of the UK government.
DJ Norman Cook (better known as Fat Boy Slim) warmed up a blend of dance fans and MPs who had wandered in from a late-night vote in the Commons.
The event was part of the finale of a DJ and mixing competition known appropriately as 'House The House'.
Shure's digital wireless microphone system was used to provide personal mics for the competition judges on stage and for the speeches given by the organisers as they presented prizes to the winner.
This year was the first 'House The House' competition, co-organised by
Mike Weatherley, the MP for Hove, East Sussex, and the charitable foundation Last Night A DJ Saved My Life. For the past two years, Weatherley has run the 'Rock The House' competition, a battle of the bands event for 16-25 year-old musicians in which the winning band gets to play a gig at the terrace bar at the House of Commons.
'House The House' is similar, but focuses on dance music and DJ skills amongst entrants in the same age range. Regional heats were held in 10 cities in late 2012 and early 2013, and a finalist was chosen in February buring a big night at the Ministry of Sound.
As with Rock The House, part of the House The House winner's prize was to play a set in the Palace of Westminster. On the night, Fat Boy Slim was the support act to the competition winner, young DJ Bryce Fury from Newcastle.
The ULX-D system was supplied to Last Night A DJ Saved My Life by their regular event audio facilities company Project Audio.
Jason Bacon of Project Audio explains: "We have been working with Last Night A DJ Saved My Life for a while on some of their events. We always intended to use our existing ULX-D system on the House The House final, but by a strange coincidence, on the day itself our system was booked out for an unrelated event at another state venue — we were working in all the halls of government that day!
"We used Beta 87C capsules with the ULX-D, which we've found to be perfect for events where clarity of speech and vocal diction is important," Bacon continued.
"We get superb results with the ULX-D; it's like no other radio mic system.
"Graham Logue at Shure Distribution was very helpful at making sure the second system was delivered to us in time for the event to take place. We have been planning to buy a second ULX-D for a while anyway, so that we have a backup for situations exactly like that one. The second system is not going back to Shure — we've now bought it. The ULX-D worked a treat and the event went off very well. We even had a few MPs join in the dancing late into the night — apparently a vote in the chamber went on very late, so a few of them joined in to let off some steam when that was over!"
