Call To Reduce Glasgow 2014's Carbon Footprint

Glasgow tourism businesses are being encouraged to help limit the carbon footprint of the upcoming 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The Sustainable Glasgow Tourism Project, which is helping tourism businesses improve their profitability through better environmental practices, is supporting the goal of the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee (2014 OC) to limit the carbon footprint of the 2014 Games.
The Glasgow 2014 organising committee are setting the standard by employing sustainable practices in preparation for the games.
When it came to moving all of the 2014 Games’ furniture, fittings and equipment from storage South East England to Grangemouth, in December, the environmental impact had to be considered.
Using carbon footprint calculation software (Bff Footprint Reporter 0.3.0), the 2014 OC compared sea, rail and road transport options, and estimated that instead of transporting the equipment by traditional routes such as road, that the most carbon-efficient method of transport would be sea.
On 21 December 2012, 350 shipping containers were transported from the London Container Terminal in Tilbury to the Port of Grangemouth.
The containers hold all of the equipment for the 2014 Games. They are now housed in one place, close to the venues, ready for use at Glasgow 2014.
Tourism businesses in Glasgow may be looking to make carbon-efficient changes on a much smaller scale – but those changes will be just as important.
