The annual event was staged in the main auditorium of the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden. The internationally recognised Olivier’s honour excellence in professional theatre for West End and other shows in the Capital and it is a huge night out for UK theatre.
S+H were contacted by Lee Batty, Head of Production for event organisers, the Society of London Theatre.
He was looking for a striking backdrop and a full leg and border dressing solution for the stage, and had previously used S+H’s products, most recently their LED Animation Cloth, on a show for Rolf Harris that he production managed.
Batty also assisted in the visual design and look of the Olivier’s, and said: "We wanted something different from last year that would bring a dynamic and special feel. I knew the quality and reliability of the S+H cloths already, so it was a natural choice for the event."
Over 1500 guests joined the glitter and clamour to see 14 Awards presented covering multiple categories, and enjoyed a cast of 450 perform a lively programme of entertainment all against the Chameleon starcloth, and broadcast live on the BBC’s Red Button.
The Olivier Awards lighting was designed by Ben Cracknell, and all channels of the fully DMX-able Chameleon starcloth were fed into the grandMA lighting control desk, operated by Alex Passmore for the show. Lighting equipment was supplied by White Light.
The flexibility offered by the Chameleon brought plenty of appropriate glamour to the show and provided a stunning backdrop to the action.
It can be set to one colour if desired – including white – static or twinkling - or have various different colour and chasing effects applied. It can be integrated into any show at the touch of a button and set to match any themed environment or space.
The Chameleon is made from the best quality LEDs and components from ShowLED, and S+H technical Support is its sole UK distributor.
S+H Technical Support’s John Braidwood commented: "It was a great honour to see the Chameleon performing at an event as prestigious as the Olivier Awards, and a real testament to the versatility of the product."
The 2012 Olivier Awards was dominated by the RSC’s new musical Matilda which won in seven categories. Based on a Roald Dahl classic adapted for stage by man-of-the-moment comedian/actor/musician Tim Minchin, the evening’s limelight was stolen by the four young stars who share the title role of Matilda.
The truly chameleon like style S + H’s newest starcloth is also proving a popular product for TV shows, concerts and live events, comedy and cabaret performances.
