Harris launch DVB-T Gap-Filler transmitter

At IBC2001, Harris introduced SPOT – an intelligent, digital repeater designed for expanding coverage to targeted areas – and at Broadcast Asia 2002, Harris is set to launch a 50W version of SPOT to add to the original 3W low-power unit.
To complete uniform coverage of digital terrestrial television will require low-power gap-filler transmitters and, as the product demodulates the incoming digital television stream and remodulates it, SPOT offers a number of unique benefits that an analogue repeater transmitter cannot. Whereas an analogue repeater simply boosts an existing signal, SPOT achieves full error recovery, and thus the viewer benefits from uncompromised quality.
A second benefit is that SPOT can also be connected to a local remultiplexer, enabling the insertion of local programming. Harris's single frequency network technology is also incorporated, to achieve maximum spectrum and coverage efficiency.
Either SPOT model can also be used as a low-power standalone transmitter for pilot networks and evaluation. It is ideal for temporary broadcasts such as special cultural and sporting events.
Using digital pre-correction, both 3W and 50W models are housed in a compact 4U cabinet, and include an uninterruptible power supply for fast restart. The 50W version of SPOT will be deliverable immediately after Broadcast Asia.
