British Film Talent Honoured

News Image
British actors, filmmakers and the best of the country’s cinematic talent was recognised during an awards ceremony last night.
The 39th Evening Standard British Film Awards saw Lynn Ramsay’s We Need To Talk About Kevin nab the Best Film prize, Michael Fassbender honoured with the Best Actor award for his role in Shame and Jane Eyre and Olivia Coleman given the nod for Best Actress for her part in Tyrannosaur.
Meanwhile, a relative, newcomer John Michael McDonagh was awarded with the Peter Sellers Award for Comedy for his screenplay and direction of The Guard.
Industry veteran John Hurt was acknowledged for his contribution to cinema with a special award. Unquestionably one of Britain's favourite actors, John Hurt has been a film and stage star for more than four decades. His big-screen breakthrough came as Richard Rich in A Man for All Seasons. Then came his remarkable performance as Quentin Crisp in The Naked Civil Servant. He won a Golden Globe for his role as an Englishman jailed for drug offences in a Turkish prison in Alan Parker's Midnight Express. Not to mention his role as the Elephant Man.
The 39th Evening Standard British Film Awards were held in association with the London Film Museum and with the support of Moët and Chandon. The editor of the Evening Standard, Geordie Greig, joined the judging panel, which included film critics David Sexton, Derek Malcolm and Charlotte O'Sullivan (Evening Standard), Kate Muir (The Times), Anthony Quinn (Independent) and Tim Robey (Daily Telegraph), with Evening Standard arts editor Fiona Hughes chairing.
