TD TV To Boost Interest In Politics

The Republic of Ireland has welcomed the pilot launch of Parliamentary 'Oireachtas' TV, describing it as a "great step forward" in increasing the transparency and accessibility of democracy.
Irish Senator Catherine Noone said it was a "very positive move" and would increase the public's understanding of the work TDs and Senators do in the Houses of the Oireachtas.
"Almost one million people will have the option of watching what their politicians are getting up to on channel 801 on the UPC network.
"The broadcasts will focus on the Dáil, but the channel will also screen coverage of the Seanad and committees which do not clash with Dáil sessions," she said.
The new station is now available on the UPC service: "By making it possible to view the business of parliament on TV, we will enhance the understanding of our legislative process and, I hope, boost public interest in how laws are progressed and which parties are supporting individual measures," the Senator said.
