BBC Cardiff Faces 24-Hour Stoppage
Members of the media and entertainment union, BECTU who are working for the BBC in Cardiff and Bangor are to mount a 24-hour strike this week in protest at compulsory redundancies.
The strike will start at 3am on Friday 30 September and will continue for a 24-hour period ending in the early hours of Saturday 1 October.
The dispute arises because of plans to cut four editors posts; BECTU is convinced that redeployment opportunities can be found.
In what is now a protracted dispute, talks have continued with management but these have failed to deliver concessions sufficient to resolve the disagreement.
An earlier notice of strike action was served but this was withdrawn to allow talks to resume.
The union's mandate to take action short of strike was then activated on 1 September.
Commenting on the dispute, BECTU National Official for Wales, David Donovan said: "Our members are disappointed at the lack of progress despite the continued talks. Strike action is the last resort but we are now preparing for this."
Meanwhile, with the Conservative Party annual Conference taking place in Manchester and the TUC organising a march and rally (Sunday 2 October) to show opposition to the Coalition government's disastrous policies of pay freezes, cuts and attacks on public services, BECTU members will be able to join a protest march and rally.
BECTU members will pre-meet at 11am, outside the main entrance to the Hilton Manchester Deansgate Hotel, Beetham Tower, 303 Deansgate Manchester M3 4LQ.
"This will give us a chance to get organised and distribute BECTU flags in readiness for the march." said a BECTU statement.
