Stats Rack Up Over UK Riot Storm

The intense international interest in the UK’s riots can been seen from the number of foreign broadcasters using Associated Press video footage of the riots this week. So far, 249 stations (98% from outside the UK) have accessed the video footage 15,600 times. This has made it the number one story from AP for the past seven days.
AP’s Global Media Services (GMS), a specialised team which is set up to provide a range of editorial and logistical broadcast facilities to enable foreign media to cover these unfolding events on location, has also confirmed high levels of international interest in the UK riots. A surge of broadcasters from countries including Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Australia, and China have been using its live stand-up positions in the Tottenham, Clapham and central London areas in order to cover the news globally.
Whilst such interest by major broadcasters is typical for the AP, it clearly demonstrates the attention the UK riots has attracted around the world. This is especially due to the fact that all eyes are on the UK as it prepares to host the looming 2012 Olympics, and with rioting feeding concerns around state security, international media has been watching with interest to see how the UK copes.
