Winner of the Jill Dando Bursary is named
The BBC has announced the winner of this year's Jill Dando Bursary, awarded in memory of the broadcaster.
Winner Katy Glassborow, from Winchester, who is 24 and has recently been working on a casual contract as a Broadcast Assistant at BBC Radio Solent.
Presenter Jill Dando had very strong connections with the South West of England, where she worked for both BBC Radio Devon and BBC Spotlight before furthering her career in London.
Reflecting this, the Bursary, funded by BBC Nations and Regions, is awarded to an exceptional post-graduate student studying Broadcast Journalism at Falmouth College of Arts. Katy is enrolling on the course this autumn.
On the interviewing panel for the bursary was John Lilley, Managing Editor of BBC Radio Devon, who appointed Jill Dando to her first job with the BBC, in Plymouth in 1986.
He said: "We were highly impressed by Katy's 'can do' attitude, her natural warmth and her determination to make it in the world of journalism."
The first winner of the Jill Dando Bursary, Sophie Long from Weston-Super-Mare, was selected as a BBC regional news trainee after graduating from Falmouth and now works as a reporter and presenter at BBC Pebble Mill in Birmingham.
