Grove Studios Adds Digital Audio Workstation

UK-based AV sales and service specialists, eMerging, has supplied Mark Knopfler's British Grove Studios with a Merging Technologies Pyramix Native digital audio workstation.
It is for high-quality high-sample-rate analogue-to-digital transfers.
Built in 2005 to serve as Knopfler's personal recording studio as well as a commercial facility, British Grove, in accordance with its founder's wishes, has always sought to offer the best of a mix of analogue and digital recording technology.
Valve-and transistor-based analogue mixing consoles nestle alongside the best Neve digital desks, and old two-inch Studer tape machines share studio space with digital audio workstations.
But Pyramix is a recent addition here, and is now being used to make super-high-quality high-sample-rate digital transfers from old analogue archive material.
"We initially looked into getting Pyramix for the benefit of one of our clients, who uses it in his studio," admitted David Stewart, Studio Manager at British Grove.
"The idea was that he could record here on another platform, then we could import the sessions as WAV files into Pyramix Native and save it in that format, so that he could take his work away for use in his studio."
However, once eMerging, the UK distributors for Pyramix, had supplied British Grove with the Native DAW package, Stewart began to find other aspects of Pyramix attractive.
"We started hearing from other people what a good editing platform it is, and thought that its ability to work at high sample rates would be useful. We were particularly looking for high track counts at 192kHz."
Like the full version of the DAW, the standard Pyramix Native package can record and play back audio at sample rates of up to 192kHz without the need for further upgrades.
"We do a lot of analogue-to-digital transfers from old analogue tapes," continues Stewart, "and obviously, we want to record at the highest possible sample rate, as some of these are old multitrack or stereo master recordings. Pyramix at 192kHz really suits us," he continued.
"British Grove Studios has been synonymous with equipment of the highest quality and best-practice workflows since it opened," commented eMerging co-founder Richard Bowen.
"It wasn't too much of a surprise when we heard that they wanted to investigate running Pyramix Native at high sample rates. It's been a pleasure to help them achieve the best possible quality for their A-D transfers."
