BECTU Counts Down To Elections
Nomination papers are now being posted to branch secretaries for the election of the broadcast union BECTU's President and National Executive Committee.
As the independent trade union for those working in broadcasting, film, theatre, entertainment, leisure, interactive media and allied areas, BECTU is required to hold meetings to consider nominations.
Branches are encouraged to give particular consideration to nominating women, disabled, BME and other minority candidates.
Tony Lennon, who has served as BECTU's President since 1992, has announced that he will not be standing for election this year.
He intends to leave the BBC's employment in March and will remain a member of the union. Tony will chair the 2010 annual conference in Bournemouth on 15th May after which the new president will take office.
The number of NEC places is determined by the membership of each of BECTU’s five divisions as of 31st December 2009. The Arts & Entertainment division is entitled to three seats, and the BBC and London Production divisions to four each. The Regional Production division narrowly missed increasing its representation from two to three seats.
A fall in membership in the Independent Broadcasting division means that its entitlement drops from two seats to one.
Where the number of nominations requires a vote, either to elect the new president or to elect the NEC representatives in any division, voting will open in the week commencing 15th March and will close on 30th April. The results will be embargoed by Electoral Reform Services, the independent scrutineer administering the ballot, until the close of the annual conference.
Members can now download nomination forms on the unions website. The closing date for nominations is 12 noon on Monday 1st March.
