Peer Appointed Channel 4 Chairman

Lord Burns, a former Chief Economic Adviser and Permanent Secretary to the Treasury, has been appointed as the next Chairman of Channel 4, Ofcom has announced.
Lord Burns will succeed Luke Johnson who retires on January 27, following two three-year terms.
Lord Burns, sometimes dubbed 'Lord Fixit', has served in a number of posts for the government. He was a member of of the Hansard Society's Commission on Parliamentary Scrutiny between 1999 and 2001, as well as a member of the Scottish Fee Support Review between 1998 and 2000.
He also chaired an inquiry into hunting in England and Wales in 2000 and chaired the National Lottery Commission between 2000 and 2001. He was also appointed as Independent Adviser to the Secretary of State in 2003 for the BBC Charter Review.
Lord Burns is Chairman of Abbey National, Welsh Water and the Royal Academy of Music and President of The National Institute of Economic and Social Research and a former Chairman of Marks and Spencer.
Commenting on his new post, Lord Burns said he was "delighted" to be joining Channel 4. He said: "This is a time of great change as we experience the impact of the rapid development of digital technology in the communications sector and Channel 4 has a very special and continuing role to play."
Ofcom Chairman Colette Bowe said: "I am delighted that we have been able to appoint someone of Terry Burns' calibre. He has an outstanding record of public service and a real depth of commercial expertise.
"He will provide strong leadership at a time of considerable change in the broadcasting world. I would also like to pay tribute to Luke Johnson's tremendous contribution to Channel 4 in a period during which it has enjoyed considerable success," she said.
Lord Burns' appointment as Chairman for three years from 2010 has been approved by Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw.
