Pandora and Quantel introduce in-context colour grading
Quantel and Pandora have unveiled a joint development at IBC which aims to transform high resolution post production workflow by enabling real-time, in-context manipulation of 2k imagery.
The joint development, christened Freeflow, is an all-new, ultra-high speed (2.5Gbps) fibre link between the Quantel iQ media platform, the Pandora Pogle controller and its PiXi colour processing engine that enables the full power of each system component to be exploited in a truly collaborative workflow model. AAF metadata is also exchanged between the systems, ensuring that all elements keep perfectly in step with each other, and each is precisely aware of changes as they happen.
The result is an integrated digital grading and finishing suite that provides real-time, non-linear processing of 2k imagery that offers total creative freedom in the postproduction process. Colourists and editors can collaborate interactively at every stage, making and changing colour correction and editing decisions at will, and reviewing the results instantaneously at full resolution on-screen.
“Freeflow lifts the creative constraints of the current high resolution ‘linear’ workflow model at a stroke,” says Mark Horton, Quantel Market Development Manager. “In-context grading means that the colourist and editor can see how every shot works in the context of the whole production, moving instantaneously to any point for comparison. Edit decisions can also be changed during the grading process. Additionally, because iQ is resolution co-existent, the colourist can begin work before all the final shots are in place. For instance, with test comps or off-line images, it is valuable to be able to see how these will work within the full resolution piece before time-consuming CG-type rendering or final shot-selection and scanning of difficult elements takes place.”
