NTL, Tandberg and Microsoft demonstrate mobile content transfer

News Image
Visitors to IBC 2002 were witness to a display of Microsoft’s Windows Media 9 series being delivered over a DVB-T mobile network to moving vehicles.
The technology demonstration was mounted by NTL Broadcast and Tandberg Television, in conjunction with Microsoft and a number of technology specialists, to create an end-to-end DVB broadcast system that features both file transfer and live streaming of real-time broadcast quality video over satellite and terrestrial networks.
Jonathan Usher, Director, Windows Digital Media Division at Microsoft, said: “This state-of-the-art technology demonstration will show how the broadcast industry can integrate open standards with new technology innovations like Windows Media 9 series and benefit from the cost-efficiencies and quality of state-of-the-art video compression delivered over a standards-based MPEG-2 transport."
Steve Holebrook, director of media solutions at NTL Broadcast, added: “Our mission is to innovate in content delivery and we have been pioneering the use of the DVB-T standard for mobile reception around the world. The demonstration exploited our systems integration and transmission skills to deploy cutting edge technologies from Microsoft and Tandberg Television that could bring major benefits to our customers.”
The event followed the recent joint announcement between Microsoft and Tandberg regarding their collaboration to offer professional broadcast solutions supporting Windows Media 9 series for the telecommunications and professional broadcast industries.
