LaCie release autonomous CD duplication unit

LaCie have unveiled their new two-in-one CD duplicator, capable of burning a full CD in less than 3.5 minutes without the need for a computer.
Versatility is key for the LaCie Dupli U&I 40x, as it can be used both in a standalone mode, whereby CD copying starts at the touch of a button, or connected to a computer through either the FireWire or the USB port.
Frederic Albinet, LaCie Optical System Product Manager, said: “Our Dupli-121 is the only duplicating device on the market to offer such flexibility. Using the duplicator as a standalone device is a real time saver, but when a drive is required for creating custom CDs, the Dupli-121 can be plugged on any computer in seconds. It’s a hassle-free duplicator that can easily be shared between users, regardless of their operating system.”
The autonomous mode is the quickest and easiest way of copying a source CD. The user simply needs to insert both media, the source CD and the target CD-R, and press the start button. No computer is required and there is no multi-level menu or software to deal with.
Writing a full 700MB CD can take less than 3.5 minutes, depending on the type of source CD, and does not require the user’s attention. Moreover, the recognition of the master CD is automatic and the progress of the duplication is clearly indicated by three LEDs. A test mode is also available to check the integrity of the CDs.
In the connected mode the CD duplicator doubles up as a high-performance 40x10x40x CD-RW drive that can be hot-plugged on virtually any recent computer. The LaCie Dupli-121 U&I is the only duplicator on the market to feature both USB 2.0 and FireWire interfaces, providing unprecedented connectivity.
The Dupli-121 U&I is also compatible with USB 1.1 controllers (the speed of the drive will then be restricted to that standard’s speed).
Whereas most duplicators use proprietary cables, LaCie chose to equip their Dupli U&I with an embedded FireWire/USB 2.0 board, enabling it to function with any standard cable, simplifying cable replacement.
The LaCie Dupli-121 U&I 40x is available through LaCie resellers and mail order partners from October 2002, with a suggested price of £399.
