Inaugral lecture is themed on British cinema in WWII

The Professor of Film Studies at De Montfort University's Department of Media and Cultural Production, Robert Murphy, is to deliver a Professorial Inaugural Lecture.
Professor Murphy's theme is British cinema and the representation of European resistance to the Nazis during the Second World War.
He said: "Support for the European resistance movements was one of the key elements of Britain's war against Nazi Germany, but resistance was effectively contained by ruthless repression and categorised by the German authorities as terrorist activity. It was also opposed by British Service chiefs who were sceptical of the military value of attacks by poorly armed amateurs and unwilling to endorse tactics of assassination and sabotage and resentful of the diversion of resources from conventional warfare.
"The way in which British films represented the resistance struggle went through several changes throughout the course of, and in the aftermath of, the war and provides an interesting example of how a medium of popular entertainment such as the cinema deals with topics which raise important and controversial moral issues."
The inaugural lecture on Wednesday November 13 will start at 5.30pm in the Trinity House Chapel on The Newarke in Leicester.
Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
