Edifis release Gradebox colour correction server
Edifis have announced the launch of their new grading unit, the Gradebox.
Compatible with all standard colour correction systems, the new Gradebox reduces from two to one the number of VTRs required in a colour grading suite, thereby reducing capital and running costs.
As all grading is disk-based, only a single VTR is required for the duration of the original source material and the time taken to lay back the finished content.
Gradebox also eliminates the need to wait until recording stops before grading can commence as the colourist can begin grading on channel 1 within seconds of starting recording on channel 2. Graded content can be auto-conformed quickly and easily. Side-by-side comparison between graded and ungraded 'one-light' content can be performed within the one storage medium in addition to emulating the external stillstore normally used for matching reference frames.
Gradebox also replaces the dedicated wipe generator or mixer, used for comparing reference frames with ungraded content. Dirt and scratch concealment tools, based on Edifis' world-famous Scratchbox, form an integral part of the system, allowing fast and easy restoration of video artefacts such as tape dropout. Video colour correction can be performed at the same time as source material is recorded onto the Gradebox disks without need to re-cue and re-run the source video tape. The lower VTR use produces a much faster process and greatly reduces wear and tear on the VTR heads and source tape, economising on running costs.
Gradebox is available with up to 19 hours of uncompressed 10-bit component video and storage capacity. This enables a colourist to record an ungraded version of an original, make the necessary adjustments and use the wipe generator to perform 'before and after' comparison.
Multiple input and output ports allow Gradebox to function as virtual VTRs for other systems such as colour correctors and edit controllers.
Colour-corrected material can be instantly played out to the edit suite without need to spend time laying off to tape. While material is being played into the edit suite, new content can be simultaneously recorded into Gradebox for the next session, again reducing time, increasing efficiency and saving money.
