BBC Trust Approve Gaelic Digital Service

The BBC Trust’s decision to approve proposals for a Gaelic Digital Service has been welcomed by Gaelic Media Service (GMS) and BBC Scotland.
GMS and BBC Scotland will now begin the process of implementing their joint plans for the launch of the new service. The GMS Board will meet tomorrow (29 January) to consider the conditions attached to the Trust’s decision.
Neil Fraser, Chairman of Gaelic Media Service, said: “We welcome the Trust’s decision. It is an important step for Gaelic broadcasting and we can now continue, in collaboration with the BBC, with our preparations for a new Gaelic television service for the people of Scotland.”
Ken MacQuarrie, Controller BBC Scotland, said: “I am delighted that the Trust has granted approval for the proposed new service. BBC Scotland is looking forward to working with Gaelic Media Service to jointly deliver this innovative service. The Gaelic Digital Service will offer Gaelic speakers, learners and all who have an interest in the language access to a wide variety of programmes and resources. The new service will offer programming which will be attractive and accessible to non-Gaelic speakers, learners and people who currently do not consume any Gaelic content.”
Gaelic Media Service is the organisation responsible for ensuring that a wide and diverse range of high quality programmes in Gaelic are made available to people in Scotland, by funding, commissioning or producing programmes for television, radio, online and new media, and by engaging in training, development and audience research. GMS and the BBC have agreed to work in partnership to create a new service that is vibrant, comprehensive, cost-effective and contemporary.
