Mike Senior Lecture At SAE London

SAE London is well known for the calibre of their audio courses, but they’re also gaining a reputation for their unrivalled Industry Lectures, which are becoming a focal point for students eager to augment their regular studies with industry insight and real-world expertise.
SAE only invite the most dynamic, exciting and relevant industry professionals to pass on their knowledge to the students of their London campus – so it came as no surprise to have an industry heavyweight like SOS contributor Mike Senior billed to reveal the truth about Mixing On A Budget in the latest SAE Industry Lecture.
Over the course of two hours Mike engaged SAE students in an interactive lecture that uncovered the pros and cons of mixing – both on budget monitors and in less than ideal conditions. Mixing can be a tricky business at the best of times – especially if you’re working to a budget – but one way to get ahead is to appreciate and understand where those limitations are. Just because you’re not working with the most professional gear in an acoustically treated room doesn’t mean you have to put up with sloppy mixes.
Working with this general theme, Mike ably demonstrated how different types of monitor, no matter how unsuitable they may first appear, and the environment you find them in are key to how your mix sounds.
"You don't need ridiculously expensive monitors or a purpose-designed control room to make consistently competitive mixes, but you do have to learn how to work around the limitations of your gear, your listening environment – and your ears."
"It's important that graduates of these music-technology courses who want careers in the industry learn how to achieve pro-level mixes no matter how tight the budget. Of course it's vital that they can handle high-end studio rigs, but they must also ask themselves how much access they are likely to have to facilities of this calibre at the outset of their careers."
