ATG Completes HD Signing For Red Bee Media

ATG Broadcast has completed a second signing studio for Red Bee Media.
Located in the Broadcast Centre at White City, London, Signing Studio 2 provides additional capacity for the creation of live or recorded in-vision sign-language captioning and extends the facility into HD.
"Britain is a world leader in terms of making TV programmes accessible to deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind and partially-sighted audiences," commented Hugo Allan, Project Manager at Red Bee Media.
"Signing Studio 1, which ATG installed in Q4 2005, is now operating 18 hours per day as a standard-definition resource. The time was right to invest in a new facility able to serve emerging high-definition channels as well as the increasing amount of SD work. The signing facility can be made available to international channels if the need arises. Output is currently visible on BBC, Channel 4, UKTV and Five.
"We are also playing out the BBC's HD trial and now have all of the infrastructure needed to provide a full HD playout service.
"Signing Studio 2 is based on a Sony 8000GSF which combines the roles of vision mixer, DVE, editor and HD router in a single unit," added Andy Eisner, Red Bee Media Technical Manager.
Programme plus signing-camera output are then recorded onto server or tape, whichever the client requires. The camera is on a fluid head but is normally used in a fixed position. Fine sizing and positioning of the overall image are handled using the DVEs within the vision mixer. As in Studio 1, we have an Autoscript prompter, Miranda Kaleido multiviewer and Barco LC-42 flat-panel monitor. The lighting is a low-heat Balcar fluorescent grid under PC control."
