Leeds Based MezzoFilms Reach 20 Year Milestone

MezzoFilms, a Leeds based production company, reels up an impressive 20 years in business in October.
Started with a £2k grant from a very youthful Prince’s Trust, Mezzo’s founding partners originally found success as a pop band that notched up a number three hit in Italy. Thankfully for the public and their future clients, they did give up the day job and began composing music for TV and corporate clients.
Over the next 20 years, Mezzo and its facilities grew to offer services from post production, scriptwriting, graphics and animations and interactive, a list recently bolstered with the launch of Poison Pen Films, a music promo company that has produced videos for bands such as the Pigeon Detectives and Little Man Tate. And the Mezzo birthday boys and girls had reason to celebrate their success early when two of Mezzo’s films (a live action and an animation) were shown at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Mike Scott said: “The early days were hard work but great fun. We started out in the basement of a terrace house in Leeds, but the business just grew and grew, through word of mouth and reputation. Now we’re producing the level of work, by talent using the standard of equipment that I could only dream about twenty years ago.”
Whether it’s to down to dogged determination, seeking the best new talent, or over delivering on projects, Mezzo are certainly respected and recognised as permanent fixtures in a very tempestuous production industry, notching up an impressive array of awards including five BAFTAs and four Royal Television Awards.
In celebration of reaching this milestone, the company are currently laying down the foundations to expand their Grade II listed premises, Scott said: “We’ve grown. We have a staff of over 30 and, because I’m obsessed with getting the best equipment, we’ve amassed a lot of kit. This building is beautiful and we’d never find another like it, so we gave up looking: we’ve decided to build on what we have.”
