FlashMic Microphone Awarded To 'New Voice' Winner
The prestigious Syngenta ABSW Science Writers' Awards took place at The Royal Society in London and saw New Voice category winner Anna Lacey receive her prize of a FlashMic Digital Recording Microphone from Mohit Bakaya, Commissioning Editor, BBC Radio 4.
Donated by manufacturer HHB Communications, the FlashMic is at the cutting-edge of portable audio recording technology for journalism – a fitting prize for an award run in conjunction with BBC Radio Science with the aim of identifying a talented young science broadcaster of the future.
Already in use with many leading broadcasters worldwide, FlashMic is the world’s first digital recording microphone, combining a studio-quality microphone capsule with a broadcast-quality 1GB Flash recorder. Files can be transferred via FlashMic’s high-speed USB interface, enabling journalists to quickly edit and produce finished pieces from the field.
Anna, a 23-year-old zoologist and former research assistant at Cambridge University, has recently started working freelance. Her winning entry, 'Mussel Power', told the early stage story of freshwater mussel research and investigated its potential in helping restore devastated lake ecosystems. As part of her prize she will spend two weeks working with producers at BBC Radio Science and science correspondents at BBC News, with a commitment by the broadcaster to air one of her pieces.
“It’s a great honour to win the New Voice award and I'm obviously very excited,” commented Anna immediately after the ceremony. “The FlashMic is a fantastic prize and is going to be invaluable as I start to try and build a career in broadcasting.”
Commenting at the Awards on behalf of HHB, Managing Director Ian Jones said: “It’s wonderful to receive so many positive comments about the FlashMic from the eminent science writers and broadcasters gathered here tonight, many of whom already use it in their daily working lives. On behalf of everyone at HHB, we wish Anna every success in her career and look forward to hearing about her experiences with the FlashMic.”
