DVB AT THE FOREFRONT OF iTV

Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) will be launching the DVB Multimedia Home Platform (MHP) specification at IBC.
DVB-MHP, a tool which will give an insight into the future of interactive digital television, has been developed for three major sectors, enhanced broadcasting, interactive broadcasting and Internet access and its modular elements allow for future upgrades.
Speaking about the forthcoming launch at IBC Anthony Smith, Head of Marketing Communications at DVB said: “DVB-MHP is a major breakthrough for digital technology that will benefit everyone in the broadcast industry.”
DVB will be holding technical demonstrations highlighting known and newly created MHP applications including Electronic Program Guides, outboard information services, interactive advertising and interactive programs.
DVB-MHP will also directly affect the set-top box, Integrated Receiver and Integrated Digital Television (IDTV) markets, as it enables content to be provided through a single device independent of the hardware platform being utilised, through the use of the MHP common Application Programme Interface (API).
Peter MacAvock Executive Director, DVB project office said: “ We set out to create a platform that was accessible to all types of development companies and service providers, both large and small and our objective has been achieved. With DVB-MHP now established as a future proof common API it is now possible to develop new and exciting interactive applications for a competitive marketplace. The task now at hand for DVB is to increase the level of awareness of the potential of this platform in those markets that have accepted DVB as the preferred standard for digital television. This is another powerful argument for selection of our technology in those countries that are considering the adoption of the DVB standard.”
