GPO FILM UNIT RECEIVES BLUE PLAQUE

THE GPO Film Unit, creators of the acclaimed film ‘Night Mail’ have been honoured with an English heritage Blue plaque at their former studios in Blackheath, London.
Founded under the leadership of John Grierson, the GPO Film Unit nurtured the early careers of exceptional creative talents including Benjamin Britten, J.B. Priestley and Humphrey Jennings.
The Film Unit was noted for their technical skill, specifically in the accomplished sound editing which took place at the Blackheath studios.
The plaque was unveiled by Humphrey Jennings daughter Marie-Lou Legg on the 50th anniversary of his tragic death while filming in Greece.
Grierson coined the term documentary to describe the artistic presentation of factual film material and is seen as the father of the British documentary film movement. He was the first to bring creative artists in to the new genre.
