NORTHERN IRELANDS FIRST DIGITAL FILM ARCHIVE

NORTHERN Ireland’s first Digital Film Archive will be launched at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum at Cultra on November 7.
With public access to over 50 hours of moving images, the Archive will provide students and researchers with an educational resource reflecting the history and culture of Northern Ireland from 1897 to 2000.
The Archive will be available free of charge on PCs at six centres around Northern Ireland – St Patrick’s Trian in Armagh, Omagh College, the University of Ulster in Coleraine, The Nerve Centre in Londonderry, The Odyssey in Belfast and at The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.
State-of-the-art, user-friendly technology at each of the six centres will provide users with high quality moving images and sound, and additional related information such as photos, historic documents and newspaper reports.
Users can look at original newsreel footage of the Belfast built Titanic, the First World War, aviatrix Amelia Earhart’s accidental landing in Derry in the 30s, the Second World War and the reconstruction years of the 50s.
Archive TV footage includes the Beatles interviewed on UTV in the early 60s, documentaries, television news, drama and feature films.
This project has been developed by the Northern Ireland Film Commission in association with the British Film Institute, and is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
