Mersey Television chooses Hamlet to maintain quality in HD

As part of a project to build two new portable shooting kits for HD, leading British production company Mersey Television has ordered two new LCD Scope 292WVA waveform monitors from test and measurement specialist Hamlet.
The Hamlet LCD Scope is ideal for the purpose, providing precision measurements of both HD and SD digital video and audio signals, using an integral high resolution liquid crystal display. For portable applications like this it eliminates the problems associated with CRTs such as focus and astigmatism. Removing the CRT also saves considerable weight and depth: the 292WVA is a mere 160mm deep. The digital signal processing circuitry ensures stable and reliable measurement even when the unit is subject to the knocks and blows of portable use.
“The two new portable shoot kits are needed immediately to service a new commission from E4 to produce 12 one hour episodes of a spin-off from our popular series 'Hollyoaks',” explained Graham Deaves, Technical Director of Mersey Television. “There is no doubt that we will be moving to HD in the near future, so as the project required new investment we made a decision to go for HD rather than SD equipment.
“We will shoot the series in HD, although the series will be transmitted in SD this autumn. The characteristic style of Hollyoaks is to shoot on practical sets, either on our own campus or on location, so we need highly reliable portable equipment. The Hamlet HD waveform monitors provide an important quality check as we are shooting.”
