Yorkshire TV to install conversion and restoration capabilities

Yorkshire TV, part of the Granada Media Group, have purchased an Alchemist Platinum standards converter, an Archangel archive restoration system and IQ Modular integration and control capabilities from Snell & Wilcox.
The new technology will equip Yorkshire Television's expanded Technical Services area.
Alchemist Platinum, the new breed of high-end standards converter from Snell & Wilcox, will primarily be used to service Granada International's programme sales.
The Archangel film and video restoration device, with the ability to correct artefacts common to archive media, will be used to expand YTV's catalogue of programmes available for exploitation both domestically and internationally.
Francis Watson, Head of Engineering at Yorkshire Television, said: "Granada have a large archive that includes older material, some of poorer technical quality.
Problems include noise and motion defects such as film hop and wave, blemishes, scratches and camera shake. We had a look at Archangel and found that it would clean up the majority of these problems in a single pass in real time."
To assist in the best possible recovery of PAL material, the order further includes a Snell & Wilcox MDD2000, a sophisticated digital decoder that provides virtually transparent decoding of composite analogue and digital signals.
A comprehensive range of Snell & Wilcox IQ Modular intelligent command and control cards completes the package.
Installation is scheduled for end January 2003.
