Doremi announces D-Cinema 3D & 48fps single-box replays

Doremi Technologies is now offering capabilities for D-Cinema replays to provide enhanced viewing experiences.
Additions to the 2K-capable Doremi V1-HD server complement new features of the latest TI technology-based DLP projectors to create something more than a film replacement.
Doremi have worked with TI to provide single-box 3D and 48fps replays, with high bit rate JPEG2000 ‘visually lossless’ compression quality.
DLNK-2K is the basic Dual Link and 2K option for the V1-HD. This now can add 3D and 48fps modes to take advantage of the new TI technology for their larger DLP projectors to display either 3D or 48p film playback. The original media is a file in 1920 x 1080 at 48fps, which is built from two interleaved 1920 x 1080 24fps images. The 3D feature supplies two motion streams for left eye and right eye that are simultaneously replayed at up to 1080/24p, and a single projector displays both these to give real 3D. Compared to traditional methods this avoids using a second projector and all the associated alignment procedures between them needed to produce convincing 3D.
D-cinema can now put a new spin on the double shuttering technique used by film projectors to reduce flicker by showing each twice. Now, if original material is 48fps this can be replayed at that full rate using the new 48p mode on the V1-HD for display as a dual interleaved 24p to generate 48 full progressive 1080-line images on the screen. This not only reduces flicker but also gives smoother motion rendition.
“Everyone knew that D-cinema would diverge from celluloid and it is happening already,” said Patrick Zucchetta, Head of Business Development at Doremi Technologies. “It is now much easier and more effective to show 3D material from just one player and one projector. Providing a 48Hz frame rate means yet better images with motion that is really smooth and gives flicker-free viewing. The DLP projectors are ready for this and we can supply the signals in an economic and reliable way in a single-box solution and with JPEG2000 quality. It’s important that cinema should always be something beyond home viewing – and this certainly is.”
The DLP projection technology from TI includes imaging chips that are capable of showing much higher image refresh rates than normal film or television.
