The Mill complete 'Jack Knife' Freelander commercial
The Mill have completed work on 'Jack Knife', a new commercial for Landrover which uses a hectic New York traffic jam to illustrate the branding power of Landrover’s Freelander.
Chaos fills the streets because a zoo transporter has jack-knifed across the road, accidentally unloading its dangerous cargo. A stream of traffic is being redirected by police who spot a Freelander in the jam. Assuming the driver is an adventurous and courageous hero, because he drives a meaty Freelander, the police ask the bewildered driver to exit his car. He’s led down to a secured area and left to his own devices while the fences close ominously behind him. A tiger comes out from the shadows. The ad ends with: ‘Freelander. It’s a lot to live up to.’
The spot’s uniquely rich look comes from overlaying the negative with a print – a Dom Murphy trademark. The result is a pumped-up feel (from the print), but with all detail kept in tact (thanks to the neg). The Mill’s Chris Knight mixed the print 50-50 with the negative. He eye-matched each frame to ensure a precise match and added further DCP colour correction where necessary. To further push the ad’s cinematic feel, Dom Murphy shot all footage using anamorphic lenses. Knight also used flame to augment and vary the shapes of some of the background cars, which were mostly of the same type on set. Finally, Knight added some more cinematic touches, like lens flair, and cleaned-up unwanted details likes rigs.
