SMITH CONFORMS AND COMPOSITES PROMOTIONAL TRAILERS

PIXELUTION'S CUSTOMER, online editor, David Smith at Oasis Television, conformed and composited all three 30 second promotional trailers for ‘I love the 1990s’ entirely in JALEO.
BBC 2 regularly broadcasts sixties classic masterworks such as Gerry Anderson's ‘Thunderbirds’, ‘Captain Scarlet’ and ‘Stingray’. Now the ‘creatives’ at BBC 2 have blown the dust off the legendary children's puppet character,’ Joe 90’ and re-shot the boy wonder in honour of his namesake decade.
Post production was deftly handled by Pixelution's customer, Oasis Television, using Jaleo Post Production Editing Software. It's all in aid of a unique BBC 2 trailer to promote the forthcoming ‘I Love the 1990s’ series.
The 30-second promo features ‘Joe 90’ using his re fashioned orb, ‘Big Rat’, as a high tech guide in order to grasp the 1990s era. ‘Joe 90’ enters the ‘Big Rat’ machine, which downloads images from the 90s directly to his brain, which then enables him to impersonate cultural icons from the decade.
Icons featured in the series include Oasis singer, Liam Gallagher, Garth from ‘Wayne's World’ and Vic Reeves.
An orb begins to rotate gradually, spinning faster and faster, resulting in a massive shockwave, glimpses of images from the 90's appear and flash by. This special effect was achieved with the use of Jaleo's Plasma feature, combined with a circular wipe pattern fed into a DVE to achieve the right perspective. The Jaleo paint package was then applied to create a protective matte for parts of ‘Joe 90’ and some parts of the orb. Jaleo's rays and various colour correctors produced the required lighting changes.
Joe was also chroma-keyed against a previously supplied montage background in the next few shots. In order to create the impression that the orb was rotating, the background was displaced using Jaleo's DVE. Moving shadows were then applied to both Joe and the backgrounds. The backgrounds were then bump-mapped over Joe's face and then keyed over the top in Jaleo to achieve a realistic effect. A moving wire mesh was generated using one of Jaleo's plug-ins. Colour correctors were then used for lighting changes and the paint plug-in was also used to create sparks as well as painting out a few unwanted rods where the wires for the puppet, ‘Joe 90’, were attached. The creation of different mouth movements for Joe, as the puppet sometimes forgot to "speak", was accomplished using the paint plug-in on Jaleo.
The special promo was transmitted on 4 August 2001, and will continue for six weeks. (CD)
