PHILIPS DEMONSTRATE WEBCINE MPEG-4 SOLUTION
PHILIPS are taking the Internet beyond the PC at IFA 2001 by demonstrating its capabilities in MPEG-4, the ISO-compliant open standard for multimedia streaming over IP-based wireless and broadband networks.
Visitors to the Philips stand will be able to experience how MP4net, a business unit of Philips Digital Networks, is enabling content providers to stream rich, high quality video and audio content over the Internet via commercially available technology.
On display will be the WebCine range, an end-to-end encoding, server and playout solution for IP networks to easily offer the interoperability and enhanced quality of the MPEG-4. WebCine enables IP content streaming to extend beyond the PC domain to emerging wireless and broadband consumer platforms.
Utilizing MPEG-4 as an ISO standard, WebCine can be broadly adopted in a wide range of multimedia-enabled devices, including set-top boxes and mobile devices. MPEG-4 has been adopted as the multimedia platform for next generation mobile devices, including 2.5G and 3G products. At CeBIT 2001, earlier this year, Philips successfully demonstrated high quality MPEG-4 Audio/Video content streaming to a GPRS handset. Future WebCine enhancements will enable digital rights management and interactive media applications using MPEG-4.
