JoeCo – British Built Reliability Meets State-Of-The-Art Technology

News Image
Broadcasting mainstay JoeCo continues producing universally trusted devices – even introducing its first interface in 2018.

Bastion of broadcasting technology JoeCo is well-established within the industry. Producing renowned rock-solid multi-track recorders for over a decade, the company has since diversified its range to include playback devices and even its first desktop audio interface, Cello, in 2018. We look over JoeCo’s journey as a company and its ever-expanding range of products.

Based near to the historic university city of Cambridge, JoeCo was founded by industry veteran Joe Bull. Drawing on his experience and expertise within the world of audio – including founding highly influential DAW developer SADiE – Bull released the original BLACKBOX multi-track recorder in 2009 as a solution for the live sound industry. Yet, as BLACKBOX became renowned for its extraordinary ease of operation, rock solid construction and pristine audio quality, the range swiftly became an industry standard within the broadcasting sector.

In the years since the advent of the BLACKBOX, JoeCo has gone on to develop a full suite of multi-track solutions for every workflow, encompassing Dante, MADI and more. JoeCo’s multi-track recorders are now the standard choice for high-profile, mission critical TV shows such as Later… with Jools Holland, The Great British Bake Off and I’m a Celebrity…, as well as for capturing audio on the world’s biggest tours by artists as diverse as Ed Sheeran and Metallica.

Similarly respected and renowned within the industry is The BLACKBOX multitrack player – a failsafe, mission critical playback device. Constructed from the same durable materials as its recording counterpart, the multitrack player permits users to play back audio in a live environment, while resting assured that the quality will be immaculate and the device won’t fail. They are also used extensively for zoned audio playback in galleries, museums and themed entertainment such as the recent “David Bowie” exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert museum.

With the BLACKBOX range quickly becoming iconic, JoeCo once again displayed a flair for innovation with the launch of the award-winning BLUEBOX. Combining a best-in-class audio interface for your DAW with the same multi-track recording technology found in the BLACKBOX range, BLUEBOX delivers the ultimate insurance policy against DAW freeze and failure. Even if your computer crashes, your source audio recordings remain safe.

With reliability as arguably the most crucial component for any device involved in live recording and playback, Bull is proud of the reputation his products have garnered: “having sold the BLACKBOX now for 10 years, our customers continue to tell us that they regard the JoeCo BLACKBOX as the most reliable recorder that they’ve ever used. The BLUEBOX Workstation interface recorders are based on similar hardware and software and are gaining the same reputation. It’s very gratifying when we hear that our products have saved a job from disaster when everything else has tipped over. This enviable reputation is not something you can invent overnight. It’s required years of development and dedication to constant improvement. We are justly proud of our products’ reliability.”

In 2018 JoeCo launched Cello – its first foray into the world of desktop recording. Designed and built to the same high standards as the BLACKBOX and BLUEBOX, Cello received widespread praise from the outset, including a recent rave review from renowned sound engineer Dennis Weinreich, “I love it. These guys have upped the game sonically.” Offering an analogue front end and a remarkable specification, the 22 input, 4 output desktop audio interface represents the ultimate combination of high-end performance and classic style.

Throughout the growth and development of the JoeCo range, Joe Bull has remained unwavering in his commitment to UK manufacturing. All JoeCo products are designed and built in Britain, ensuring the highest possible quality standards.

The same is true for the latest JoeCo innovation – the BBSG24MP BLACKBOX SoundGrid Recorder, which for the first time brings the famous reliability of the BLACKBOX range to the increasingly popular Waves SoundGrid platform.
