What To Expect In The World Of Broadcasting
The world of broadcasting is fast-evolving. See what you have to expect in the upcoming decade, according to the PwC's annual 'Global Entertainment & Media Outlook' report:
IP Workflows Will be the Only Workflow
Many broadcasters have already made the switch to an IP-based workflow, but we are likely to see a complete retirement of SDI in the near future. Just as SDI once replaced the tape-based workflow, IP promises to be another significant industry paradigm shift. With IP, broadcasters and content creators can make their productions a part of the network infrastructure that connects directly to every computer and mobile device (among other tech) in the world. IP makes possible delivering thousands of high quality videos to audiences near instantaneously even on a reduced budget.
VR Will Only Get Bigger
Digital media segments will far surpass traditional media segments in growth. Virtual reality (VR) in particular will see the most growth by 2022, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) that is four times the rate of the next leading segment: OTT. By 2022, VR headset shipments will increase to an estimated 26.3 million as VR technology gets incorporated into both entertainment and productivity platforms.
Internet Advertising Will Outpace TV Advertising
TV advertising will see only marginal growth, with a CAGR of under 5% by 2022. Internet advertising, on the other hand, follows closely behind OTT with the third highest projected CAGR at nearly 10%.
Media & Entertainment Sectors Will Converge
Convergence will be a hot topic for the entire media and entertainment industry. More than ever before, different types of media companies are looking to expand into new sectors, creating increased competition for engaged audiences. TV companies, tech companies, OTT services, movie studios, and even non-M&E brands will compete to provide TV content to viewers.
5G Will be Pivotal
Future developments in VR, augmented reality (AR), 4K and 8K resolutions, high quality downloads and streaming, and artificial intelligence (AI) will only be possible with the fruition of 5G wireless networks. 5G will enable networks to respond to requests in just 1 millisecond, compared to the 15-60 milliseconds latency on our current 4G and 120 milliseconds latency on 3G.
