‘Belleville Rendez-Vous’ scoops BBC Four World Cinema Award
‘Belleville Rendez-Vous’, the French animation tale from Sylvain Chomet, has won the first BBC Four World Cinema Award.
The story follows Madame Souza's search for her grandson, Champion, a young cyclist kidnapped while racing in the Tour De France. Her quest takes her to Belleville where the Triplets of Belleville – a singing sensation trio from years gone by - offer their assistance.
On winning the award, director Sylvain Chomet said: "I'm delighted and honoured, especially when I consider the mind-boggling array of talent Belleville was up against in the pool of contenders.
"It's particularly touching to be recognised by an establishment for which I have a great deal of respect and admiration.
"The BBC Four World Cinema Award accolade is one that I will truly treasure."
This is the first year of the BBC Four World Cinema Award, an award that celebrates the wealth of contemporary international film-making and the channel's commitment to international cinema.
It was announced in November 2003 and experts and viewers were invited to nominate their favourite international film.
