BFI TAKE OVER ITC LIBRARY
THE BRITISH Film Institute (BFI) have been chosen to take over the Library of the Independent Television Commission (ITC), subject to negotiation.
As part of their planning for the merger of the four communications regulators to form a new single regulator, OFCOM, the ITC are committed to ensuring the future of their television archive.
Earlier this year, the collection of the ITC Library was put out to competitive tender. Strict criteria were set down to judge the suitability of applicants including a guarantee of access to the general public and a priority service to the broadcasting industry.
The BFI were chosen for a number of factors, including: Their prominent status as a respected institution; Their established links with the television industry; Their investment in new media; Their plans to create a new National Library for Film, Television and Media Literacy and their calibre of service and realistic costings.
The ITC will retain and renew contemporary material and other official documentation. Pending the outcome of negotiations, the BFI will take over the library in 2002. (CD)
