AIR INSTALL WORLD’S LARGEST AMS NEVE 88R CONSOLE

THE internationally acclaimed Air Lyndhurst studio complex have replaced their Neve Legend console in Lyndhurst Hall with a 96-channel AMS Neve 88R – the largest console of its kind in the world.
The London-based recording and post production complex, owned by Chrysalis and Pioneer and chaired by Sir George Martin, marks their 10th anniversary in 2002. The installation of the new desk will ensure that the centrepiece studio continues to attract high profile orchestral and film recording projects well into the 21st century.
Explaining the decision to upgrade the Lyndhurst Hall’s control room, general manager Jacqui Howell said: “The Hall was the first of our studios to be completed and therefore it follows that it should also be the first to be re-equipped.
“Although the old desk was perfectly functional, we felt it was advisable to change it before it became creaky. We have taken the opportunity to install the very latest in console technology and increase the number of channels on the desk. We are also making some modifications to the control room to create more working space.”
The studio, which re-opens in February with an Eric Levi orchestral session, will feature new air-conditioning, a new patchbay and a bigger client lounge that has been created by knocking into one of the smaller booths. A clever system of sliding doors means that the booth can still be used as part of the live area, which is already large enough to accommodate up to 100 musicians.
The decision to buy the recently launched Neve 88R was taken after careful consideration of all available console options. The studio eventually opted for 88R because it has built-in 5.1 capability and features tried and tested technology.
Air’s technical manager, Tim Vine-Lott, said: “The 88R is an excellent console and years of work have gone into its construction. Air has long had a close association with Neve and over the last four years we have actively participated in this console’s research and development. All our senior engineers are familiar with Neve desks and love the sound of them. We have other Neve consoles in the complex, including one of three that were specially built for Air some years ago, and we have never had any complaints. In a cutting-edge commercial facility it is just as important to take note of customer preferences as it is to stay up to date with the latest technology.” (GB)
