XL Video supply MTV Europe Music Awards

XL Video Belgium supplied 15 large LED screens and a total of over 1200 tiles of Barco D-lite screen for the recent MTV Europe Music Awards in Edinburgh.
XL Belgium have been involved with the MTV Europe Music Awards for 10 years, and this was the eighth show for the company headed by Guido Ruysschaert. The first was 1994, when the Awards were staged at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.
XL Belgium supplied 15 LED screens rigged all around the arena. Stageco supplied the mother grids and heavy duty trussing to support the massive aggregate weight of the lights, as well as sound and video production.
The 15 Barco screens were all rigged from ‘goal post.' Seven in the main stage area were constructed from D-lite 7 high resolution LED, and the eight around the marquee were Barco D-Lite 10.
Approximately forty 50-inch plasma screens were supplied and fixed to the grandstand railings to enlarge the ‘total video screen effect’. These were supplied by a local company, together with the slickly organised video cable runs to all the XL screens – totalling over 3000 meters of SDI signal cabling.
Camera equipment was supplied by CTV and operated by MTV Europe staff. The show was mixed in the OB truck via a Sony 7350 mixer, and included seven channels of EVS hard drive units, 12 ARCs, six channels of DME7000 DVE, two remote ‘hot-head’ cameras and an Arkaos system.
Live video footage (IMAG) was not used on the screens, which featured only pre-recorded inserts of nominees, some advertising, and graphics for each artist.
Large format projection specialists E\T\C UK supplied five PIGI 6Kw projectors with double scrollers to further boost the visual elements, which looked particularly spectacular for the Dido and Kraftwerk sets.
Overall lighting and video colouration for most of the performers was synched to produce a single colour, bathing the whole arena.
