A Look Ahead To BVE 2017
2016 was a year of debate. To IP or SDI? 4K or HDR… or both? Is VR the new 3D? For all of us who either took a strong view or stood agnostic on the breaking trends of 2016 we certainly cannot deny it was an exciting year for the broadcast and media industries.
The beauty of BVE is that it kick-starts the year, reviewing and learning from the year past whilst also looking to the future.
For 2017 the show has broadened its reach and has embraced the converging markets, which is partly down to the technologies being utilised across many sectors now.
The free-to-attend content tackles the burning questions that concern everybody across the broadcast, AV, systems integration, live events, connected media and creative sectors.
VR and its potential applications will be a prominent focus throughout the show, in both the theatres and on the show floor. The AV, Integration & Live Theatre sees Tom Nelson, Creative Producer at the Royal Opera House provide a live VR demo, enlightening audiences on designing the live stage through VR whilst over in the Post & Workflow theatre, attendees can hear from a panel of VR experts entitled 'Broadcasting VR – key considerations before application'.
2017 also sees the launch of the 'VR Experience' where attendees can experience the latest in filmed VR content from multiple production companies including BBC Earth, Sky, Sennheiser and Happy Finish, as well as talk to the technology experts that make the immersive experiences possible.
In the spirit of collaboration and convergence, BVE have implemented some important strategic partnerships. With content no longer confined to our television sets, Connected Media Europe is launching its theatre programme, which will take place on the show floor.
The theatre will act as a destination to explore the technologies that enable audiences to receive, discover and interact with content across any device, looking at IP focused technology such as IPTV, OTT, mobile, social and the cloud.
How consumers receive and view content may mean that the landscape has changed drastically for broadcasters over the years, however there are some issues in the industry that will always be ongoing.
Yearning for better picture quality is always going to be the same – no matter what is achieved ten years from now, there will always be somewhere else to go, which is why for both exhibitors and the theatres, 4K and HDR are hot topics.
In the Cinematography & Lighting theatre, Tony Miller, BSC, cinematographer whose credits include Fleabag and Quirke, will hold a session 'The Devil is in the Lighting – Lighting for HDR' with the Post & Workflow Theatre looking in to HDR delivery.
BVE is here to educate and inspire both visitors and exhibitors, creating opportunities where there may have been none before. As well as acting as a platform to aid the buying and selling of media and entertainment solutions, BVE provides the stage for the industry to explore, discover and integrate – and I am very much looking forward to what promises to be the best and busiest show yet.
