£17 million boost proposed for specialised cinema

THE FILM Council have announced a final stage of industry wide consultation on their new proposals for separate, but complementary, financial measures relating to cinema education, distribution and exhibition for ‘specialised cinema’, the term being used by the Film Council to define the sector that prioritises the exhibition of less mainstream films.
The proposals are a £1 million fund for cinema education, a £1 million selective 'print and advertising' fund for distributors and a £15 million capital fund to invest in the screen/technology infrastructure run in association with the Arts Council of England.
The present proposals are the based on the results of a series of exercises that began in summer 2001, when the Film Council set up an internal working group to look at how it could assist the specialised exhibition and distribution sector in the UK.
Full details of how to participate in the consultation are available on the Film Council's web site at: www.filmcouncil.org.uk/about/betterpicture
