GB Labs Welcome Successful IBC

Fresh from attending IBC2016, GB Labs talks to BFV about the company's presence at the show, and its latest product launch, Fast NAS.

GB Labs launched Fast NAS at IBC this year. Can you tell us more about it?
We looked at the current status of the storage market and the needs of the majority and realised that many potential customers were purchasing consumer/prosumer grade NAS based on price. The inevitable dissatisfaction in performance and features was widespread and came from the completely theoretical performance figures that other manufacturers were promising. We decided to take our knowledge and expertise from our 16 years of experience and develop a lower cost platform to sell alongside our Space, Vault and Echo product lines.

The new platform is built on server grade hardware and designed to perfectly match the performance requirements of the product range. We have tried to keep cost down whilst not compromising on quality or user experience by offering a powerful combination of HDD and SSD all managed by our award-winning hybrid disk management technology. This is similar to the technology used in our HyperSpace range and is repackaged on a smaller scale into the FastNAS product range. This offers huge performance benefits and something unique and purpose built for modern file based workflows rather than an off the shelf general purpose NAS.

How was it received at the show?
The success is probably best measured by the amount of orders that have been placed already. This includes many orders that were made on the booth during the course of the show and is over 500% more than we have seen with previous product launches.

The idea that you can buy into the same technology that the best names in the media industry trust to deliver their content at a totally affordable price seems have hit the nail directly on the head. Customers know and love our Core operating system and the FastNAS range is powered by the same OS, although it has been cut down in functionality but still uses the same powerful and unique engine to deliver best of breed performance under heavy load.

Last month the company also announced a partnership with Comprimato to offer storage workflows for Adobe Premiere Pro users. What does this involve?
The popularity of Jpeg 2000 is growing and we have been working with a number of different manufacturers to build even more intelligence into our storage. Comprimato have provided their expertise in the codec, which has allowed GB Labs to develop a technology that serves multiple different resolutions from the same file in real time based on user login credentials.

So no need for tedious encoding tasks to give creative users different qualities of footage and many additional files on your storage… One file and multiple resolutions for the most efficient collaborative workflows. Adobe amongst others are very interested in working with us to fully utilise this unique and game changing technology.

Any other news? What can we expect next from GB Labs?
As always we have many exciting new things in the pipeline and plan to bring yet more great technology to the market next year. Space has been used extensively at the Olympics in Rio this year and we look forward to sharing the success stories with your readers very soon.
