Velvets: The Professional Choice

News Image
With a multitude of manufacturers and models to choose from, LED lighting for video has become a minefield to navigate for freelancers, broadcasters and rental houses alike.

Lighting is an intrinsic part of the creative process, with it alone regarded by many the number one factor in defining the 'look' of a production. As such, producers and purchasing managers should consider their options carefully before committing to a particular brand or model of light.

Of the many factors to consider, durability and robustness are aspects that are often overlooked. Designed and manufactured in Barcelona by TheLight, the Velvet range of professional LED lights are some of the toughest available on the market.

All Velvet models are constructed from strong lightweight aluminium, with no fan or moving parts. This makes the Velvets ideal for rental environments or fast-paced productions with large crew – where mishandling is more likely.

Location-friendly Velvet 1 and Velvet 2's are tested to an IP54 rain and dustproof rating, allowing for operation in some of the world's harshest weather conditions. The larger Velvet 2x2 and Velvet 4 models are dustproof, with an IP51 protection rating, making them ideally-suited for long-term studio assignments.

The Velvets also excel in usability, where it could not be simpler to adjust dimming or colour temperature. A digital readout allows operators to precisely dial-in specific brightness values – from 0% to 100% in single percentage steps, and temperature values – adjustable in 100°K steps from 2700°K to 6500°K.

TheLight's advanced digital drivers ensure the output remains accurate during dimming, constantly recalculating colour temperature for a precise output.

Built-in DMX enables control from a standard lighting desk, or with multiple Velvets linked, the ‘master-slave’ function supports synchronised adjustments between different panels.

Velvets are designed to be naturally super-soft, without the need to diffuse or modify the light further. This shadow-less characteristic makes them perfect for talent-based productions, as skin tones will reproduce accurately and beautifully on camera. The Velvets score highly in both CRI (Colour Rendering Index) and TLCI (Television Lighting Consistency Index) tests.

Despite the influx of new LED lighting manufacturers in recent years, gaffers, camera operators, rental houses and broadcasters continue to favour trusted brands, whilst also acknowledging the benefit of local stock, support and service. In all respects, the Velvet lights should be at the top of the wishlist for anyone wanting to take LED lighting to a professional level.
