Success For Irish Talent At BIFAs
Irish talent has picked up a number of major awards at this year's Moët British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs).
The ceremony, which took place in London on Sunday night, saw three Bord Scannán na hÉireann/ Irish Film Board supported films scooping awards.
The award for Best International Independent Film went to Lenny Abrahamson's Room, based on Emma Donoghue's novel of the same name. Starring Brie Larson and Jacob Trembley, Room was produced by Element Pictures' Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe.
Saoirse Ronan was named Best Actress for her role in John Crowley's Brooklyn. Adapted by Nick Hornby from the book by Colm Toibín, Brooklyn was co-produced by Parallel Films' Alan Moloney.
Olivia Colman picked up an award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Lobster. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, The Lobster was produced by Ed Guiney and Lee Magiday for Element Picture.
Also at the BIFAs, Brendan Gleeson was named Best Supporting Actor for his role in Suffragette. Ex Machina, which stars Domhnall Gleeson, received the honour of Best British Independent Film, as well as Best Director and Best Screenplay for Alex Garland.
Speaking at the event, James Hickey, CEO, IFB, said: "It is wonderful to see such films as The Lobster, Brooklyn and Room honoured this evening amongst the very best in independent filmmaking. In what has been a terrific year for Irish film to date, these awards are testament to the wealth of Irish talent and to what can be achieved through international co-productions. Congratulations to all involved."
