Globecomm completes content delivery lab

News Image
Globecomm Systems, a leading global supplier of end-to-end satellite-based communications solutions, have announced the completion of a hi-tech content management and distribution laboratory.
The new facility is designed to enable content owners, broadcast companies and equipment providers to develop and evaluate products for content delivery and interactive television applications in an actual operating environment.
“We’ve made a substantial investment in time and capital to create this state-of-the-art laboratory,” said Tom Parish, Vice President of Globecomm’s Broadcast Technology Group that designed and built the facility.
“It is a cornerstone of our development of engineering, integration, implementation and management services in the content management and distribution solutions arena,” he said.
At the heart of Globecomm’s facility is a complete four channel Scientific-Atlanta digital cable head-end operating into a virtual “home theatre” environment. With this base, Globecomm have the ability to configure and test complete end-to-end systems for the management and distribution of media assets via satellite to cable or DSL head-ends. For testing interactive video solutions, the laboratory is also equipped with Video-On-Demand (VOD) servers from SeaChange International and Concurrent.
“Our goal is to keep this facility on the leading edge of content management and distribution issues and technology,” said Mr Parish. “On that front, Globecomm is presently evaluating the areas of Digital Rights Management and MPEG-4 transmission.”
Requests from other companies or organisations interested in using the New York lab will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by Globecomm. The company will also give special consideration to colleges and universities depending on the relevance of their research projects.
