SMPTE Scoops Engineering Emmy

SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers) picked up the Philo T. Farnsworth Award at the 66th Primetime Emmy Engineering Awards Ceremony during the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on 8 January.

The award, which honours an agency, company, or institution that has "made a significant impact on television technology and engineering," was picked up by SMPTE Executive Director Barbara Lange.

Ms Lange said during her acceptance speech: "I thank The Academy for this prestigious honour and recognition. I am proud to accept this award on behalf the SMPTE Board of Governors and our international membership, including an army of dedicated volunteers.

"For nearly one hundred years, it has been the pioneering thinking of our members and volunteers who make television innovation possible so that consumers can enjoy a quality motion image. Technologies, such as the colour bars, HD-SDI, as well as our latest work in UHD, high dynamic range, immersive audio, and tactile essence are the result of technology leaders coming together to standardize and educate the industry. And like Farnsworth before us, this work will continue to expand the boundaries of the television ecosystem as the industry and consumers demand more from a multi-platform environment. I know that 100 years from now, SMPTE will continue to be an integral part of the moving image technology ecosystem."

SMPTE Life Fellow, Larry Thorpe of Canon U.S.A. Inc., received the Charles F. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement Award at the ceremony. The award honours an individual "whose ongoing contributions have significantly affected the state of television technology and engineering."

The namesake of Larry's award, Charles F. Jenkins, is the founder of SMPTE. During the evening, Alex Trebek and Yahoo Tech founder David Pogue served as masters of ceremonies.
