Location city lauds BAFTA-winning actress

Liverpool’s Lord Mayor has sent official congratulations to Julie Walters on scooping a BAFTA for her role in a contemporary drama set in the city.
'My Beautiful Son', which was filmed in locations across the city in January 2001, received critical acclaim when it was screened on ITV1 last Christmas.
Liverpool’s Lord Mayor, Cllr Gerry Scott, said: “Winning an award as prestigious as a BAFTA is no mean feat and on behalf of the whole city I am passing on my congratulations to Julie. She entertained millions of people with her performance, and I have written to her saying ‘Well done’ from the people of Liverpool.”
In the drama, Walters plays a mother who gives up her son – played by former 'Cheers' star Paul Reiser - for adoption. Years later, they are reunited in tragic circumstances when he returns to Liverpool from New York after being diagnosed with leukaemia in order to search for his real family and a bone marrow donor.
Liverpool city council’s film office helped organise locations for the shooting of the drama, whilst social services advised writers on adoption procedures to ensure the script was realistic.
Walters was named Best Actress at a star-studded event in London, beating off competition from Sheila Hancock, Lyndsay Duncan and Lesley Sharp, to take the gong.
Sir Bob Scott, Chief Executive of Liverpool’s Capital of Culture bid, said: “This is great news for Julie and the whole city. It demonstrates that some of Britain’s best TV is being made in Liverpool. Our status as a film city is one of the many reasons that we are bidding to be named European Capital of Culture in 2008.”
