Penguin Children’s Announces Partnership Deal With Cartoon Saloon and Dog Ears

Penguin Children’s today announced a partnership for its Puffin imprint with Irish animation studio, Cartoon Saloon and Northern Irish children’s media company, Dog Ears, to co-produce Puffin Rock as a multi-platform brand – including an animated TV series (39 x 7-minute episodes), digital and physical format books, and apps.
Puffin Rock follows the adventures of a family of puffins. The stories have a playful, natural-history tone and focus on a young puffling, Oona, and her little brother, Baba, as they explore the sea, land and sky around their island home. The puffins share the island with an array of friendly sea and land creatures, including an elusive mermaid.
Eric Huang, Director, New Business and IP Acquisitions, Penguin Children’s, explains:
“At Penguin Children’s we have been publishing Puffins for over 70 years. This is a project close to all our hearts. Puffin Rock has captured our imaginations with its playful storytelling and loveable characters. We are very excited to be working with Cartoon Saloon and Dog Ears to develop their puffins into a multi-platform brand.”
Paul Young, CEO, Cartoon Saloon, said:
"Cartoon Saloon has enjoyed a wonderful relationship with Dog Ears developing the world of Puffin Rock. Adding Eric and the rest of the Penguin team as partners will help us take our characters to a global audience in all manner of media. It’s very exciting times for Oona and the rest of the animals on their puffin island!"
Laura Campbell, Editorial Director, Dog Ears said:
“The Puffin imprint is clearly the perfect home for Puffin Rock and we’re delighted that Eric and the team at Penguin love our Puffin Rock characters. It has been a great honour to work with Cartoon Saloon and a dream-come-true to add Penguin and Puffin to the partnership.”
The co-production partnership is the latest in a line of recent acquisitions and co-production partnerships that include Topsy and Tim, Hattie B, Magical Vet; Whale Trail; Moshi Monsters and Skylanders for the Penguin Children’s Group, which is the number 1 children’s publisher in the UK.
