Soho Square Studios Sound Engineer Named Most Promising Newcomer
Soho Square Studios have announced that its 24-year-old sound engineer Adam Smyth has been named Most Promising Newcomer at the Conch Awards, the UK’s annual celebration of film, television and commercials audio.
The prestigious newcomer award recognizes the person in the British audio post-production industry, in any field, that is considered by the awards committee to have the most potential. To qualify for the award an entrant must have been involved in the creative side of the audio industry for less than three years.
Smyth, who has been involved in audio post-production for just two years, was chosen ahead of two other strong candidates in what turned out to be a hugely competitive category. The awards committee said: "There was so much work of a very high quality that selecting a winner in the Most Promising Newcomer category was by far the most difficult task of the day. Without exception all those who were considered can be very proud of the work they submitted, and I have no doubt we will hearing from many of them again in other Conch Award categories in future years."
Smyth himself added: "With so many highly skilled and talented newcomers out there it is a real honor to be recognized with this award. I feel very privileged to be working on so many great projects and with so many great people. It is their creativity, vision and passion that drives me to develop my skills and my passion for audio."
Armed with a degree in Audio Engineering from Alchemea College, Smyth moved swiftly from Runner to Sound Designer before joining Soho Square Studios. Already an established sound engineer his CV includes commercials for Samsung, Barcardi and Bombay Sapphire as well 5.1 cinema trailers and TV work for Foundation TV and Maverick Television. Smyth has also done music composition work for Lancome and Davidoff commercials.
Soho Square Studios senior engineer Simon Capes, himself a multi-award winner, heaped praise on his young colleague. He said: "In the short time I've had the pleasure of working with Adam he's proven his technical and creative skills to be top notch. He is a very confident character. He'll go far."
Now in their 7th year, the Conch Awards celebrate outstanding achievement in audio for film, television and commercials in the UK. The 2012 event took place at the Mayfair Hotel in London on Wednesday 19 September 2012.
