WORK Microwave Enhances Modem Technologies With New Traffic Optimization

WORK Microwave, a leading European manufacturer of advanced satellite communications, today announced several advanced new features for its comprehensive range of high-speed DVB-S2 modems. Leveraging the devices' new traffic optimization and bandwidth-capacity management features, broadcast, satellite, and telecommunications providers can more efficiently and reliably deliver a high-quality video and data service.
WORK Microwave's modem family includes the DVB-S2 Modem SK-TS for transport stream applications, DVB-S2 IP-Modem SK-IP for IP/Ethernet data transport and DVB-S2 Modem SK-DV for combined data and video transmission. Complete implementation of DVB-S2 technical specifications such as multistream, adaptive coding and modulation for highest bandwidth efficiency, generic stream encapsulation, and the higher modulation schemes 16APSK and 32APSK offers support for a wide variety of applications.
Utilizing WORK Microwave's innovative new filter technology, users can achieve up to 15-percent bandwidth gain on top of the DVB-S2 standard. Operators can constrain the bandwidth of modulated spectrum to achieve a roll-off of 5 percent or more, depending on the tightness of the filter. This allows carriers to be more space-efficient in a multicarrier environment or realize the greatest possible symbol rate within a transponder in a single-carrier-per-transponder environment.
A new cross-layer traffic-shaping design enables equipment to communicate openly across network layers, providing users with a reliable way to optimize throughput and increase the available amount of bandwidth, ultimately leading to a higher quality of service for end users. Operators can classify and prioritize traffic according to symbol-based (signal layer) and rate-based (IP layer) rules and parameters in order to better manage the distribution of available bandwidth.
Designed for content providers relying on a hybrid infrastructure that requires both TS and IP interfaces, WORK Microwave modems now include seamless integration with DaVid technology. DaVid technology enables operators to transport data (network connection) and live broadcasting (video content) simultaneously over a single satellite carrier. The DaVid technology works by aggregating multiple MPEG transport streams and IP data into a unified DVB-S2 multistream.
"WORK Microwave modems bring efficiencies to many leading broadcast, telecommunications, corporate network, and government organizations worldwide," said Joerg Rockstroh, senior R&D engineer, WORK Microwave. "Our advanced new bandwidth and traffic optimization developments give users the flexibility to support an even broader range of professional applications across many different fields."
